Marine Construction Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a permit to make changes to a dock? What is the first step to getting a permit?

All new marine construction, including new docks or additions to docks, requires a permit. Seven Seas Marine construction works closely with several surveyors for maritime projects and constructing docks in Murrells Inlet, SC and Horry County and Georgetown County SC. In addition, we work with state and federal agencies to get proper permitting in place for your marine construction project. We can also handle organizing any required surveys for your project.

How long does the marine construction permitting process take?

Each project has a different timeline based on the scope and location of the project. For most private, residential docks, it takes about 90 days to complete a project. However, timelines can be extended based on surveyor availability, public notices, and OCRM requirements.

Why do I need a boat lift? What benefits does a boat lift provide?

Boat lifts are an easy way to securely and safely store your boat. When you store your boat out of the water, you prevent potential damage if the boat bangs into the dock or sinks into your slip. Boat lifts prevent damage from summer storms, providing a sturdy and durable place for your boat to rest when not in use.

You can prevent damaging corrosion and algae growth with a boat lift. Giving your boat out-of-water storage time products your paint job as well. Overall, a boat lift helps you maintain your boat’s value and extend its lifespan.

Can I increase the value of my home with a dock and/or boat lift?

For waterfront homes, having a dock and boat lift can add significant value to your home. Boat parking is considered one of the top 10 most profitable home improvements coast homeowners can invest in.

A dock and boat lift adds convenience to your home that many boaters are looking for. Homes with docks in Murrells Inlet, SC, and the Grand Strand, SC, are much more valuable when they have a well-constructed boatlift.

How does having a boat dock increase my property value?

The federal government has the power to limit the number of boat slips and docks in each state. The process of constructing a dock or boat slip is regulated, and any new construction must go through the local permitting office.

For the general Myrtle Beach area, this process is managed by the Department of Health and Environmental Control-Ocean and Coastal Resource Management office. When a home already has a dock or boat slip, this adds significant value because you are giving future homeowners access to a limited commodity while saving them time in the permitting process.

What is a seawall?

A seawall is a constructed element, either a wall or embankment, designed to prevent erosion from encroaching onto your land. Seawalls can prevent erosion from lakes, rivers, ponds, oceans, and any other water source that could threaten your land and the buildings on it.

What are the benefits of having a seawall?

Seawalls provide several benefits for your property. The main benefit of a seawall is it provides protection from erosion. Your property line is protected from slowly drifting away or suddenly disappearing in the event of a natural disaster. Seawalls can increase the value of your home and help it sell faster.

Finally, seawalls provide personal protection from severe weather events. Fast-rising floodwaters can put you and your family at risk. A seawall can help you gain valuable time to evacuate or even prevent the floodwaters from reaching your home.
